Skill School 2017

Skill School 2017

Mark your calendars for June 19-22
for Skill School 2017.

Sunnybrook Skill School is four days of fun in which kids learn skills in sports, music, dance, arts and more!

For just $35, kids who have completed kindergarten - 5th grade, can participate in two clinics of their choice.  Skill School starts each day with energetic music and an entertaining live drama.  Kids then attend their two clinics.  A snack is provided each day, and a t-shirt is included in the cost of registration.

Registration begins April 17th (6am) and ends May 17th (11:59pm).

Absolutely no registrations will be taken after the deadline and no refunds will be given after May 17th.  Clinics fill up quickly and are assigned on a first-come, first served basis, so sign up early.

One way in which Sunnybrook works to be the hands and feet of Christ is by extending care to others in their time of need.  Sunnybrook Care takes place through a variety of means and forms including one-on-one relationships through counseling, Section Ministry and more.  See below for a complete listing.  For questions, please contact BJ Van Kalsbeek at or by calling him at 712-276-5814 x33.

Section Ministry

We know that coming to a large church for the first time can be intimidating.  At Sunnybrook we have a group of people just to help you feel at home.  Section Leaders wearing a blue lanyard are available especially for you to help answer questions, provide prayer support, and an open heart.  Section Leaders are found in the seating areas of the sanctuary before, during and after each service.  For more information or to join the Section Ministry, contact Lydia Miller at 712-276-5814 or at

Sunnybrook believes that life change is best experienced in the context of a small group of people that join you in living every day life, share your struggles and encourage you along the way.

lIFE Groups

Life isn’t easy, and neither is spiritual growth. You need encouragement and support from others to go deeper in your walk. That’s where Life Groups come in.  Life Groups typically meet in host homes on a weekly or biweekly basis.

In a Life group, you can experience connection, community, and care. You are encouraged to grow spiritually in an atmosphere of acceptance, trust, confidentiality and accountability. Life groups emphasize growing and serving together, while building deeper relationships as you encourage one another. The groups are typically made up of 6-12 people and meet regularly in someone’s home.

To get involved in a Life group, contact Chris Ver Steeg at 712-276-7915 x32.  Or, click here to find out what groups are available.

Growth Groups

Our Growth Groups meet on Thursday evening at the Thursday@Sunnybrook community gathering in the Loft at Sunnybrook Church.  This weekly gathering is designed for adult mid-week worship, growth and support.  Combined worship starts at 6:30 p.m. with individual classes and groups breaking off at 7 p.m.  For a list of groups click here. The first Thursday of the month there is a community dinner at 6:00 p.m.  Childcare is provided for all sessions, please contact Shelli Jordan at to register.

This 10-week series is a safe and accepting place for people who are wrestling with questions, just starting their journey or feeling disconnected from God. For information, contact Laurie Van Cura at 276-7915 x 26 or email

Just For Men

Just For Men

Men of Valor is the men's ministry here at Sunnybrook. We are a group of guys who gather together to dive into the bible and discover what it means to be a Godly man. We have adopted three principles that help us on this journey which are reject passivity, take responsibility, and lead courageously. We offer many opportunities to get connected through small group or events such as 4-wheeling, mountain climbing, tailgating, and hunting. There are also ways to get involved through community service opportunities. Join us as we support and encourage each other in the great adventure to becoming Godly men.

What to expect

Are you a mother of a child still in the womb, in kindergarten, or anywhere in between? MOPS is for YOU. Being a mom is beautiful and hard and we get that sometimes you just need a safe space to breathe. A place to get some encouragement that what you are doing matters. We’re a loving group of local moms who aren’t perfect, but we’re learning how to be the best moms possible – just like you. Won’t you join us? Our program includes:

Morning Coffee: Pulled an all-nighter with the kids? Come just as you are and start your morning with coffee, juice and a delectable assortment of breakfast goodies. You don’t have to try to feed yourself before you come! (and stay in your jammies if you want to – or at least your yoga pants – you don’t have to dress up for us, we get it!)

Instructive and Inspiring Speakers: Through practical talks, heart-felt faith stories and funny anecdotes from other moms “in the trenches,” our topics explore everything from parenting to self-care. Our speakers offer insight that is relevant to the life of a mother.

Small Groups: The intimate and accepting atmosphere of a small group offers you and other moms a chance to share your stories, questions and concerns; and start building some lifelong friendships. By sharing with fellow moms, you can get a fresh perspective on your very important job as mom.

Quality Child Care: We want you to feel comfortable knowing that your children are enjoying their morning as much as you are. Our MOPS Kids program provides your preschooler with a full morning of activities. Our infant and toddler nurseries are staffed with wonderful caregivers who lovingly care for your children while you get a break.

We meet September through April, every other Friday morning, from 9-11am in the Sunnybrook Loft. Sunnybrook MOPS first meeting is September 8th. We are excited to announce the launch of another MOPS group this year. Westside MOPS is starting September 14th at Liberty Elementary to offer a MOPS community in another part of town that also allows working moms to attend, since it runs from 6-8pm.

For more information about meetings and the registration fee, contact Shelley at

More information about MOPS International can be found at

Marriage is one of the most important and sacred relationship journeys we embark upon.  It is also the crucible that brings out the best and worst in us as individuals and couples.  At Sunnybrook we are diligent about helping couples grow, strengthen and mend marriages.  If you have questions or are seeking individualized help for your marriage, contact Jeff Thelander at or BJ Van Kalsbeek at or call the church office at 712-276-5814.

Marriage Programs

At Sunnybrook, we have two programs that offer help for couples looking to work through specific issues in their marriage.  The first is Marriage Mentoring in which couples will meet with a mentor couple for 8 weeks to focus attention on particular issues, gain fresh perspective and improve communications.  The second is Christ focused Marriage Counseling.  This counseling is provided by Sunnybrook staff or we refer to Daniel Rumberger (712-277-4760) in Sioux City or Deon Wynia, from our counseling partner Bethesda Christian Counseling in Orange City (800-269-3160).  Deon Wynia is on site at Sunnybrook on Fridays.
