Love & Relationships Day 21

Scripture: Proverbs 28:7 Young people who obey the law are wise; those with wild friends bring shame to their parents.

Devotional: Today’s passage tackles the difficult subject of friends. As a parent, you will face the inevitable time in your kids’ life when friends take a major front seat in influencing your child.  This can be a good thing, or a very bad thing. And it’s up to you as a parent to help your child make good choices when it comes to who they hang with.

Helping your child early on to realize that “Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33) and “Walk with the wise and you become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm” (Proverbs 13:20) will go a long way in helping them to live a godly life.  And to protect them from the harm that results in walking with fools.

Reflect:

  • What are you doing as a parent to influence your child in walking with wise friends? With being a wise friend?

Scripture: Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Devotional: Yesterday we talked about discipline, but today we’re honing in on how NOT to do that.  Don’t be harsh and provoke your kids to anger with your overly controlling behavior.  If what you’re doing isn’t working, becoming frustrated and a tyrant with your kids isn’t going to make it better.

Rather, train them with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.  Let your parenting be overflowing with the fruit of God’s Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, goodness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22) Be intentional and proactive, not reactive, with your parenting practices. And be sure to continually pray for God’s supernatural power and presence to be with you as you parent.

Reflect:

  • Think about how you most often dispense discipline with your kids.Would that discipline align with the fruits of God’s Spirit listed above, or is it more often accompanied by anger and impatience?
  • Pray that God will help you be patient and proactive in your disciplinary efforts.
