Is God Fake News? Day 18
Scripture: Matthew 4:4 Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Devotional: Have you ever noticed how often the Bible uses metaphors about food or drink? Sweet as honey, bread of life, wine gladdening the heart, choice morsels, water that satisfies the thirsty, the finest of wheat.
Most likely these references are used because it’s something we all can relate to. We must eat and drink to survive. Food and water are a daily necessity for life. Which is precisely why this passage today is so spot on. Not only do we need food and drink for our body to survive, we need the Word of God for our soul to survive. We are not merely flesh and blood. We are soul and spirit. And the Word of God is our food to feed that which is eternal.
Jesus actually spoke these words in the desert, when he was fasting; that is, going without food and drink for forty days. The devil came to tempt Jesus, and this was His reply. Jesus, fully God and fully man, needed the Word of God to nourish His soul as well. How much more you and I need His life giving Words to sustain our weary and malnourished souls.
- What are you doing daily to feed your soul with the Word of God?
- When it comes to the nourishment of your soul, would you describe yourself as malnourished or healthy?
- What are you willing to do to change that?
