Jim Class Day 26
Scripture: James 3:13-16 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
Devotional: In this passage, James contrasts the wisdom of God, which is characterized by good life, good deeds and humility, with earthly “wisdom” which consists of bitter envy and selfish ambition. He goes as far as to characterize this earthly “wisdom” as demonic.
This is probably as good a time as any for a gut check, because harboring bitter envy and selfish ambition is serious business. And serious implications follow.
- In what areas are you most tempted to harbor selfish ambition?
- As you identify these areas, take a deeper look and try to identify the origins. Is there an insecurity you’re unconsciously trying to mask? A wound you’re protecting? A pride that’s out of control? As things come into view, take time to surrender those areas to God and seek HIS wisdom in your life.
