This Changes Everything Day 28

Scripture: Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Devotional: Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? The mercy of God sort of feels this way as expressed in today’s passage doesn’t’ it?  We show mercy and will receive it.  We receive mercy, so we extend it.  There’s a circular pattern to the mercy of God.  A pattern that continues to turn again and again as long as we don’t stop the cycle.

God’s mercy is unending.  When you’re able to receive God’s mercy and then extend it, you keep that pattern going and honor God’s gift in that way.  And you’re able to fully live out your calling to be an agent of God’s mercy.

  • Is there anything standing in the way of the pattern of God’s mercy being received and extended in your life?

This Changes Everything Day 27

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 God comforts us in our troubles, so that we can comfort others who are in trouble with the same comfort that we ourselves received from God.

Devotional: Have you ever considered acts of comfort as extending God’s mercy?  When you:

  • embrace a crying child in your arms
  • attend a visitation to comfort a grieving friend
  • send a note to someone you know is struggling
  • bring a meal to a stressed out mom and her family

you are acting as an agent of God’s mercy.  No doubt you’ve been a recipient of these kinds of merciful acts and so much more.  But sometimes the opportunity for us to show comfort slips by in the midst of our own busy or self-absorbed life.  Have you ever had a thought to extend comfort to someone, but then it got lost in the midst of your hectic day/week and you let the opportunity slip by?  If so, you’re not alone.

But what if you and I began to look at those thoughts as a prompt from God and we prioritize them in our lives?  And therefore decide to act immediately and swiftly on them, knowing that it’s part of our calling as an agent of mercy?

Whether it’s a small act or a big one, would you determine that the next time you get a “God prompting”, you’ll place that as a priority for that day and follow through with God’s mission to be a comfort to another.

I believe you’ll be glad you did.

  • How might you make yourself more sensitive and attentive to God’s “promptings”?
