This Changes Everything Day 24

Scripture: Jude 1:22-23 Show mercy to those whose faith is wavering. Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. There are still others to whom you need to show mercy, but be careful that you aren’t contaminated by their sins.

Devotional: Who do you know whose faith may be wavering during these times?  Or others who have no faith at all that need to be rescued from the certain eternal death they face without Christ?

According to this passage, you and I are to show mercy to them, all while guarding our own hearts and standing firm in our faith so we don’t stumble.  The imagery here is that of snatching them from the flames of judgment.  That’s a pretty powerful visual.  It’s like running into a burning building to save someone’s life.  There’s a definite risk, but when you love someone, you’ll likely take that risk.

Going back to our definition of mercy- undeserved forgiveness or unearned kindness, think about that person or persons that came to mind and pray for God to show you how you can offer undeserved forgiveness or show unearned kindness to them today.

Reflect:

  • Make a list of the ways you can show mercy to that person or persons God placed on your heart, then carry out that mission as God’s agent of mercy this week.

Scripture: Luke 6:36  Show mercy to others, just as your Father shows mercy to you.

Devotional: The beautiful thing about the mission of mercy that we’ve been given is that we don’t have to wonder how to fulfill that mission.  Today’s passage summarizes how:  show mercy as the Father shows mercy to you.  We simply emulate the Father’s mercy.  And we follow Jesus’ example in doing so.

Remember when Jesus said these words,  “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” (John 5:19)  Though Jesus was fully God Himself, He still was guided in His life by doing what the Father did and said.  And if you and I are to be an agent of mercy, we must do the same.

Whether you realize it or not, you are a recipient of God’s mercy in a plethora of ways every day.  When you take the time to recognize that mercy at work in your own life, you can better turn around and extend that same mercy to others.

Reflect:

  • Make a list of all the ways God has been merciful to you in this past week.
  • How can you in turn extend that mercy to others God has placed in your influence?
