Scripture: James 1:16-18 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Devotional: As a follow up to yesterday’s devo and Scripture, today we are warned to not be deceived.  God gives you the gift of resistance if you choose to receive it. From the very beginning in Genesis 4, God tells Cain at the onset of his temptation with anger, “Sin is always crouching at your door,  it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Unfortunately, Cain rejected God’s warning, was deceived, gave way to his anger, and killed his brother.  Lust led to Sin, which led to Death, the death of a brother.

 Reflect:

  • How have you seen your own desires or lust give birth to sin in your life?
  • How might you receive God’s gift of resistance so that you are not deceived by the enemy of your soul and drawn into the mire of sin?

Scripture: James 1:13-15.13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away and enticed by their own lust. 15 Then, after lusthas conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Devotional: Years ago, I memorized this passage as the LSD verse. Lust leads to Sin which leads to Death.  It’s a simple concept really.  But one that we are too often unaware of.  And before we know it, we find ourselves in the midst of destruction and death.  Death of a relationship, death of a dream, death of a life that we cherished.  2 Corinthians 2:11 reminds us not to be unaware of Satan’s schemes.  And this is one of his go to schemes every time.

But you don’t have to fall for it.  What are those desires within you by which you are most likely to be enticed and dragged away?  Sexual temptation?  Lust for power or prestige?  Money? Gossip? Anger? Drunkenness?

The first step to overcoming this downward spiral in your life is to flee from the very onset of temptation.  Don’t flirt or toy with it.   James 4:7 says, “Submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” And you can best flee when you are aware of your own weakness or propensity for sin.

 Reflect:

  • What are those areas in which you are most likely to be tempted? List them on a piece of paper or in your notes app on your phone.
  • Each day this week, submit these areas to God in prayer. Put a plan in place at what action you will take next time you find your desires being stirred and the bait being set before you.
  • Consider an accountability partner that you can enlist for help in these areas.
