Basic Christianity Day 11

Scripture: Hebrews 6:19-20 (Phillips) This hope we hold as the utterly reliable anchor for our souls, fixed in the very certainty of God himself in Heaven, where Jesus has already entered on our behalf, having become, as we have seen, “High Priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek”.

Devotional: Last week in our devotions we talked much about the crimson thread that weaves throughout Scripture and God’s epic story; the crimson thread of blood sacrifice that was shed to pay the penalty for the sin of man. In this sacrificial system, there was always a high priest that was set aside to offer these blood sacrifices on behalf of the people.  Atonement had to be made again and again through a designated priest.

But, as we see in today’s passage, Jesus has become our great High Priest.  His sacrifice on the cross of Calvary did away with the priestly system once and for all.  He is the High Priest forever.

We need not fear losing our salvation because of a sin or sins that we’ve committed.  Because Jesus lives in order to intercede for our sin.  Hebrews 7:23-25:

Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;  but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

Jesus is able to save completely.

Our hope in Jesus is the anchor for our souls, it is the thing that holds us secure in the most devastating of storms.
