Basic Christianity Day 8

Scripture: 1 John 5:11-13  And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Devotional: Do you ever struggle with doubt, wondering if God is really real, and if salvation and eternal life are certainties?  If so, you’re not alone.

God knew that, as humans, we would wrestle with these issues.  And in His lovingkindness, He reassures us through His Word that we can be assured of our salvation through Jesus Christ His Son.

In this week’s devotions we will take a look at some of the very passages we can go to again and again to be reminded of God’s plan for us and for the security we have in Christ.

God inspired the apostle John, who was an eyewitness to Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, to pen: I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.  Not wonder, not question, but that you may know you have eternal life.

John states simply so that there’s no mistake, if you have the Son you have eternal life; no Son, no life.  Eternal salvation comes through believing in the Son of God.  To have Him is to receive Him, as John 1 says, to those who received Him, to those who believed in His name.

When you believe He is who He says He is, and you receive the gift of salvation poured out on your behalf upon the cross of Calvary, you can be certain that eternal life is yours.

Do you have the Son?

Reflect:

  • If you’ve never received the gift of eternal life through Christ Jesus, you can pray a simple ABC prayer right now to do so. God, I ADMIT, I’m a sinner, I BELIEVE your Son Jesus died on the cross of Calvary to pay the penalty for my sin, and I COMMIT my life to you.
  • If you have received Christ as your Savior before, but still struggle with doubts, let today’s passage encourage you to KNOW that you’ve been saved.
