Lean on Me Day 7

Scripture: Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Devotional: Hebrews 10  reminds us that there’s an extreme sense of urgency to our gathering together in community and fulfilling the purpose of the church.  That urgency is that the Day is drawing near,  What day?  The day that Jesus returns to this earth to redeem His followers;  to bring Heaven from up there, to down here.  The day that followers of Jesus will be separated from those who are not, and God’s just judgment will be carried out.

For those who belong to Jesus, this is an exciting and greatly anticipated day.  One that we long for with joy.

But what of those for whom this day is the ending of their opportunity to be reconciled with God?  That’s an excruciating thought.  And one that should compel us all to be about God’s plan to ensure that all people are known, loved, cared for and cherished; so they are reconciled to God through Jesus’ message of love.  A message being lived out authentically in our community with one another, and in our willingness to invite others into that community of love.

  • Who do you know that needs to be known, loved, cared for and cherished, and who needs to experience the salvation of Jesus Christ?
  • Invite them to be part of your small group and share Jesus’ love with them.

Scripture: Matthew 18:20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

Devotional: Today’s passage holds an important and additional benefit to being in community with others:

God’s Holy Presence.

He promises that when we gather in His name, He will be present.  There’s no better reason to make gathering with others a priority in your life than His promised Presence.

And we can all use a little more of that.

  • When’s the last time you gathered with two or three (or more) people in the name of Jesus, just to spend time with His teaching, experiencing fellowship, and/or praising His name?
