Love & Relationships Day 17
Scripture(s): Deuteronomy 6:6-9 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts, Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Proverbs 22:6 Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.
Devotional: Here’s where the real work begins; teaching your children to walk in the way of the Lord. In order to do that, you have to be walking in His ways yourself. Are you immersing yourself in God’s Word? Seeking to follow Him? Chances are the answer is yes, if you’re engaging in these devotions. But how do you take that to the next step and pass that on to your children?
Unfortunately, many parents feel ill-equipped to teach their children about walking with God. Mostly because they feel like they don’t have it all figured out themselves. Reality is, none of us do. And having all the answers isn’t the point.
According to this passage, you teach your child by keeping God close to your heart, walking together in this faith journey. You learn God’s commands and way of life through His Word. You talk about it while you’re hanging at home and driving in the car. You make His Word visible all around you and you practice what it says. This is a together thing. And whatever you lack in knowledge, you’ll make up for in your sincere desire to figure it out together as you go, displaying a heart and passion to know Jesus and to make Him known to your kids.
