Day 7 Love & Marriage

February 10, 2024

Scripture: Ephesians 5:1-2, 21 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God… Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Devotional: We talked earlier this week in our devotions about submitting to God.  Today, the apostle Paul takes that to another level: submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Man, is that a whole different kind of challenge.

We are called to walk in the way of love, especially in our marriages, following Christ’s example to live sacrificially. Jesus gave up His will for God’s will, and we are to do the same. But this can be tricky. This is not an excuse for someone to Lord over their spouse that “you must submit to me.” Not at all.

Over the years, I’ve likened this to a metaphor of a couple standing on the edge of a cliff, that cliff representing an issue or conflict they are having. They join hands and jump off together, submitting simultaneously to dive into the issue as one, trusting Christ to be with them to guide them and provide a spirit of reconciliation and unity.

It’s a beautiful picture of trust, mostly trusting in God as we surrender to one another and to Him. And He is faithful. As you practice this act of love, He will work in ways you never expected.

Reflect:

  • What is one way you can submit to your spouse out of love for Christ, trusting God with the outcomes?
