Love & Relationships Day 20
Scripture: Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.
Devotional: Yesterday we talked about discipline, but today we’re honing in on how NOT to do that. Don’t be harsh and provoke your kids to anger with your overly controlling behavior. If what you’re doing isn’t working, becoming frustrated and a tyrant with your kids isn’t going to make it better.
Rather, train them with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. Let your parenting be overflowing with the fruit of God’s Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, goodness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22) Be intentional and proactive, not reactive, with your parenting practices. And be sure to continually pray for God’s supernatural power and presence to be with you as you parent.
- Think about how you most often dispense discipline with your kids.Would that discipline align with the fruits of God’s Spirit listed above, or is it more often accompanied by anger and impatience?
- Pray that God will help you be patient and proactive in your disciplinary efforts.
