Day 8 The Church

January 21, 2024

Scripture: Mark 2:17 … ”It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Devotional: This week’s devotions will be a repeat from last week in order to align with the Sunday message that was canceled last week due to inclement weather.

We’re talking again this week about the church and frankly, many times people get the wrong idea about the church; like somehow, it’s place where everyone has it together (or should have it together). But Jesus busted that myth as He was being criticized by the religious leaders of the day for hanging out with unsavory characters: tax collectors and sinners. His response is priceless, as you can see in today’s passage.

I was once at a conference where we were asked “if your church was a car, what kind of car would it be?” My mind immediately went to “an ambulance.”  It’s our function to pick up injured people where they are and bring them to a place where they can experience healing. That is, at the feet of Jesus.

In this way, the church can also be much like a hospital for the spiritually ill.  Sometimes people are moderately sick and other times they are critical; sometimes their healing is swift, and other times their sickness is chronic.  Either way, we are to be a safe place where each person can receive the care of Christ through the body of believers that gather together.

Reflect:

  • What has been your perspective of the people who are part of the church? How does Jesus’ words impact your perspective?
